Did you know that a simple “mmm” sound can calm your mind and ease stress? Beyond relaxation and breathwork, vocalization has long been a part of spiritual and religious traditions. The “OM” chant in Buddhism and Hinduism, devotional hymns in Christianity, and communal singing in worship all highlight its deep connection to human well-being. Whether for meditation, prayer, or simple relaxation, humming continues to be a powerful tool for calming the mind and body. Across different traditions, humming has been linked to healing, altered states of consciousness, and stronger social bonds through shared rhythms and sound. Specific vocal tones create frequencies that naturally soothe the mind, fostering a state of calm and focus.

Science is catching up with what ancient traditions have recognized for ages. Humming does more than make a tune. Studies show that humming encourages alpha brainwaves, which promote relaxation and mental clarity. It’s even linked to boosting confidence, empathy, and compassion while easing stress and anxiety. And it’s not just good for the mind. It has physical benefits too.

A 2023 study showed that humming can increase heart rate variability, or HRV, a key indicator of autonomic nervous system health. Here’s something fascinating: Humming actually creates vibrations in the nasal cavity that can increase nitric oxide production by up to 20 times more than normal breathing. One particularly intriguing benefit of humming-induced nitric oxide production lies in its positive impact on circulation and cardiovascular health.

One of the best things about humming is that it requires no special instrument or setting. You can do it anywhere – at your desk, outside on a bench, or in the comfort of your home. While a quiet space can help you focus, it’s not necessary. If you’d like to be more intentional about humming, try this simple approach as taught by Patrick McKeown, author and Director of Education at Buteyko Clinic International. The clinic is most well-known for teaching The Buteyko Method, a breathing technique to optimize oxygen delivery in the body.
