In Part 1 of this three-part series on Jay Martin’s near-death experience, American father and author Jay recounts suffering a heart attack and traveling through an amber tunnel into space after his heart stopped. Jay was born in Englewood on the south side of Chicago, surrounded by crime, community, and love from his family. As a teenager, he joined a dance group that performed at concerts. In 2001, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, where hardship followed. Jay lost his grandmother, and the following year, his cousin was murdered. He was also diagnosed with several health conditions, including lupus, severe depression, severe anxiety, a pulmonary embolism, and angina. He worked overtime to support his four children and never blamed the Creator for anything.
On August 17th, 2016, Jay walked into his house with a funny feeling in his chest and called his mom, his brother, and the girl he was dating. He later learned that he had driven himself to the hospital, parked perfectly, and walked through the emergency room doors, where he immediately collapsed as his heart stopped. After doctors resuscitated Jay, his heart stopped again. They resuscitated and stabilized him, put a stent in his heart, and flew him to Riverside Hospital in Columbus. The hospital called his family in Chicago and urged them to come because his condition was critical. As his family began driving to the hospital, they received another call telling them Jay had died. His children, other family members, and employer were notified, and his cousins and others announced his passing on social media. Jay also recalls that his employer began the insurance process and sent his family a condolence letter.
And while those things were happening with the social media and everything, I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know I was deceased. I thought I was just sleeping. I had no idea. Jay still knew that he existed. He found himself hovering over the dark, gloomy expressway beside the hospital, then in a courtyard in Columbus. As he looked at the surrounding buildings, the scene suddenly changed.
Don’t know the time frame and whatnot, but I was in this tunnel. And the tunnel was a completely oval tunnel. And there were hands, as if it were people reaching out, reaching up. It was nothing malicious. I didn’t feel scared. I didn’t feel anything, actually. And the tunnel was amber, and I tell everybody, just because it was amber doesn’t mean it was hell. To Jay, the hands seemed to be reaching out for help. As he reached the end of the tunnel, he found himself almost immediately in space, with no bodily form, no hands or feet. He felt that he was part of everything. Looking down, he saw a planet.
I don’t know if it was Earth. I don’t know what planet it was, but it was a planet. You saw the green spaces on the planet, but there was an energy protruding from the planet in the form of a tree. The energy circulated in and out of the planet. To Jay’s left was a swirl of stars like a portal or cyclone. Years later, he saw an image online of the Andromeda galaxy that resembled what he had seen. Everything else around him was black.
[I] looked at the planet, looked at the stars, and then I heard my name. And somebody was saying, “Jay.” And I didn’t know where it came from. But then when I finally awoke, I was at peace. I was not afraid of anything. Join us tomorrow for Part 2 of this three-part series, as Jay recounts his daughter’s plea to the doctors to give him more time, the challenges of his recovery, and how his experience transformed his understanding of love.
