Former drug addict Lisa Sharkey shares her near-death experience of falling into hell.
Lisa grew up in a religious family, attending church, earning good grades, and excelling in sports. At six, she was molested by boys at school. This trauma gave her a deep fear of men, leading her to avoid relationships and focus on sports and martial arts.
In college, Lisa entered a same-sex relationship, believing it defined her identity despite her upbringing calling it wrong. After the breakup, she became depressed and at 20 turned to alcohol, making it her “god.” By 21, she frequented gay bars, drank heavily, and later abused cocaine, meth, and eventually heroin. Working as a driver for a drug dealer, she spiraled into jail, drunk driving, and violence.
In 2016, after a heroin overdose, Lisa collapsed at a drug acquaintance’s apartment. Blue and unresponsive, she demanded an ambulance, but her acquaintance dragged her outside, robbed her, and left her in the gutter. Crying “Jesus, help me,” she slipped into pitch-black darkness, her soul leaving her body. A breeze carried her downward through a void as an evil presence pushed her into increasing heat.
She landed in what felt like quicksand or muddy clay, trapped and unable to move. Above her was a pitch- black sky, darker and more evil than anything earthly. The darkness itself caused pain, like fiery darts piercing her senses, eyes, ears, and pores. In the distance she saw the gates of hell— charred, decrepit, like burnt cemetery gates—beyond which was a vast lake of fire with brimstone crumbling into it, as if hell expanded itself every day.
Frozen in fear, Lisa felt an indescribable terror, a constant state of panic multiplied beyond imagination. She relived every sin, heartbreak, and moment God tried to reach her, her thoughts screaming loudly. Hearing her mother’s voice say, “Lisa, I wish you would come back to Jesus,” she screamed, “I wish I would have listened.” Flames engulfed her, hotter than earthly fire, as her teeth broke and gnashed. She longed for a drop of water, like the rich man in the Bible, and believed she would never see her family again.
At last, Lisa screamed, “Jesus, save me!” and she was suddenly pulled from the flames into an ambulance. Still feeling her arms melting and blood boiling, she cried out for forgiveness as paramedics restrained her, one with piercing blue eyes watching her. At the hospital, after her repentance, Lord Jesus (vegetarian) calmed her spirit. When later offered heroin, she refused, associating it with hell.
Temptation continued. In July 2018, after mixing molly (MDMA) and meth, Lisa’s kidneys failed and she had another near-death experience. Entering a tunnel of radiant colors filled with peace, she saw a golden cloud and then the Light of God. In a subconscious exchange she said, “But God, my family,” and, “But God, I’ve got work to do for You.” Pulled back into her body, she awoke in the hospital.
Though depressed for weeks, longing to return to Heaven, Lisa accepted her mission to do His work. In 2019, she surrendered fully, quit drugs, and was baptized. Addicted now to Lord Jesus, she shares her testimony to warn others that hell is real and save them from that fate (Randy Kay)
