FLOOD SAFETY TIPS To be better prepared for increased major flooding globally, follow these 10 steps to stay safe and ready:
BEFORE A FLOOD 1) Activate Weather Alerts + Turn on national weather service alerts on your phone or use a hand-crank weather radio. 2) Understand Alert Terms + Know the difference between these important terms (used in the US): > Flood watch: Hazardous weather is possible. Be prepared. > Flood advisory: Flooding is expected to be inconvenient, but not necessarily dangerous. Be aware. > Flood warning: Hazardous weather is very soon, or already happening. Take action. > Flash flood warning: Flooding is very soon or already happening, and the flood is especially sudden or violent. You might only have seconds to find higher ground. > Flash flood emergency: There’s a severe threat to human life, and catastrophic damage is about to happen or is already happening. At this point, officials are typically reporting information on evacuations and rescues. 3) Locate High Ground + Identify nearby elevated areas that won’t flood for quick evacuation if needed. 4) Prepare a Go-Bag + Pack flashlights, batteries, food, water, medications, hygiene items, blankets, and a whistle. + Keep the bag ready to go at all times. 5) Include Special Items + Pack diapers, baby formula, or a hand-crank weather radio for emergencies if relevant.
DURING A FLOOD 6) Avoid Floodwater + Never drink or touch floodwater; it may be contaminated and dangerous. 7) Follow Local Guidance + Listen to local officials’ instructions during a storm for evacuation or safety steps. 8) Evacuate Early + Leave before the storm hits to avoid being trapped or risking danger. 9) But If It’s Too Late to Evacuate, Don’t + Just 6 inches [15 centimeters] of moving water can knock a person down, and a foot [30 centimeters] of moving water can move a car. 10) Don’t Drive in Floods + Very often the people that die during floods are driving across bridges or they’re trying to drive through water. + Remember, even shallow water can be deadly (Phys.org)

Tip for new/aspiring vegans: Protein is not the issue, it’s digestion you may find challenging at first. Gut experts recommend the following steps to ease your transition into veganism, helping your body and mind adjust to plant-based eating: 1) Include Fermented Foods + Tempeh, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso support a balanced gut and better nutrient breakdown. 2) Use Digestive Aids + Plant-based enzymes and probiotics can improve protein absorption and reduce gas. 3) Soak and Sprout Beans and Lentils (or Buy Them Pre-Sprouted) + This reduces gas-causing compounds and boosts nutrient absorption. 4) Chew More, Stress Less + Slower eating supports enzyme release and gut-brain teamwork. 5) Hydrate Wisely + Water between meals (not during) can help avoid dilution of stomach acid. Combined, these tips create a digestive environment that allows your vegan diet to do what it’s supposed to: fuel, heal, and sustain your body and mind better than ever (VegOut)

Microchip and Tag Your Pet-Person + In case they do escape, up-to-date identification can be a lifesaver. 10) Talk to Your Veterinarian + If your pet-person has a history of phobia or panic attacks, ask about anti-anxiety medication or desensitization therapy (The Holidog Times)
