American therapist Sharon Coyle shares her near-death experience from 1992: After high school, she developed severe inflammatory bowel disease. Despite every available treatment, her colon was near rupture, and surgeons scheduled emergency surgery. During the operation, she went into a medical coma.
Before the coma deepened, Sharon briefly awoke in agony, freezing and covered with tubes. She could barely open her eyes, whispered for her mother, then slipped away again. From inside her body, she heard doctors tell her mother, “She’s in the woods, we don’t know what’s going to happen.” Inside, she screamed that she was alive— but no one heard.
Then Sharon felt her heartbeat and saw what looked like red blood cells, as if she had become them, rising upward until she floated out of her body, above the hospital roof. She felt completely calm, resting on white, soft clouds in perfect temperature— no pain, only peace.
A man appeared ahead of her. As he turned, she recognized her beloved grandfather, who had died three years earlier. Overjoyed, Sharon ran to him and embraced him. “I want to stay with you,” she pleaded. “Please don’t send me back there—it’s so much pain.” She remembered the years of suffering—bleeding, weakness, isolation, and endless nights on the bathroom floor. Her grandfather listened tenderly but told her firmly, “You can’t stay with me. You have to go back. It’s not your time. You still have work to do.”
The moment he said this, everything went black— then Sharon woke fully alert. Thinking she was in recovery, she rang for a nurse. The nurse froze, pale with shock, and ran out. When her surgeon entered, he only said “Hmm” and left quickly. Her mother soon arrived from lighting candles at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, crying, “It’s a miracle— you’re awake!” Sharon had been in a medical coma for a full week.
From that moment, Sharon knew God was always with her, beyond any single religion. She embraced all “light” religions—including Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism—seeking to praise God in every language and tradition while doing His work.
