American author Jeffrey Welsh shares his near-death experience in which he learns Heaven is real.
In May 1981, 19-year-old Jeffrey took one last ride on his motorcycle before selling it. Without a helmet, he sped down his farmhouse driveway at nearly 100 miles [160 kilometers] per hour. Cresting a blind hill, he planned a wheelie— only to face an old blue pickup truck driven by his sister and brother-in-law.
A black-and-white life review flashed. With no escape, Jeffrey prayed, “Lord, help me,” and jumped from the bike. Witnesses saw him strike the truck’s cab, somersault two or three times, and land behind it.
Yet Jeffrey felt cradled by the Holy Spirit, birds singing until they hushed as he was gently laid down. His soul left his body, attached by a silver cord, hovering a foot [0.3 meters] above the ground as he observed the chaos. His sister, believing she killed him, ran to their mother.
Pulled upward, Jeffrey pleaded with God, “I can’t leave. My mom needs help.” He saw his sister reaching their devastated mother in the kitchen. Rising past the treetops, he was escorted by the Holy Spirit toward a brilliant, indescribable white Light—not blinding, but filled with Love. As he rose, Jeffrey was free of fear despite his usual fear of heights.
In Heaven’s “lobby,” Jeffrey saw people mingling. Someone recognized him, though he couldn’t tell who it was. Dressed in white, Jeffrey felt whole and free, unburdened by physical needs.
Approaching a clouded veil, Jeffrey’s escort left. He sensed God’s presence and overheard discussion about him. An arm reached out, touched his heart like a reset button, and God’s commanding Voice said, “Not yet. There is more work for you to do… You have to finish that important project first.” Instantly, Jeffrey returned to his lifeless body.
Unable to move or breathe, he prayed again. A warm circulation of love filled him, restoring life. His family rejoiced as he stirred. Though urged to stay still, he insisted on standing and walked with help. At the hospital, doctors found no injuries— not even a scratch. When asked if he believed in God and miracles, Jeffrey said yes. The doctor, recognizing the miraculous, released him, saying, “Continue on your journey.”
Later, Jeffrey led an intervention for his mother’s drug and alcohol abuse, leading to her 35-year sobriety— fulfilling what he believes was the “important project” given to him by God (AJ Parr Spiritual Journalist NDE Podcast)
